The west coast of Britain is one of the most dangerous coasts in the world, and on 23rd April 1947 a 7,000 ton liberty ship, the S.S. "Samtampa", entered the Bristol Channel in a strengthening gale. The "Samtampa" quickly got into difficulty, and the Mumbles lifeboat was called out to render assistance.

On a wild and isolated stretch of the South Wales coast stands Sker House, once a medieval grange of the Neath Abbey before being substantially enlarged in the form of a fine Elizabethan manor house by the Turberville family. Since 1685 it has been occupied for most of the time by a succession of tenant farmers until the 1970s.
